Virtual Community Case Study – Harvard Case Study

LWV of Curry County and LWV of Coos County joined forces to host a virtual community case study on Friday evening, May 14, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm, via Zoom. Participants received the case materials before the session. Teachers led the discussion using the case method process (the Socratic method), which prompts discussion and debate. The study derived from the Harvard Civics Project, “an initiative formed (1) to bring case method teaching to high schools, and (2) to use this methodology to deepen students’ understanding of American democracy.” []

This community case discussion was essentially the high school classroom experience – but moved into the public domain. Two local teachers presented the case study: Phoebe Skinner of Pacific High School and Dustin Hood of North Bend High School. The study they selected was Martin Luther King and the Struggle for Black Voting Rights.

The interactive event drew 22 participants from around the state and beyond. The lively, informative, 90-minute event covered 100 years of black voting, from 1865, the end of the Civil War and slavery, to 1965, and Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, Alabama.
